Bulls thrash Richmond

The Aylesford Bulls Ladies were comfortable winners when Richmond visited at the weekend, finishing on top in a 50-0 rout.

Aylesford Bulls ladies welcomed what was on paper a very strong Richmond XV to the Jack Williams ground. Without a recognised fly half the ladies knew this would be a tough encounter.

The Bulls received the kick off and were faced by some stern tackling as Richmond raced out of the blocks and turned the Bulls over twice in quick succession. The Bulls weathered the early pressure and eased down field. The Bulls soon turned up the tempo and had Richmond pinned in their 22, who were forced to touch the ball in goal to give the Bulls a 5 metre scrum.

Richmond were driven back over their own line. No 8 Catherine Spencer picked from the base before bouncing off a couple of tackles to score the games first points at the 15 minute mark. It was only 2 minutes later that outstanding centre Lisa Bohrmann, playing her last game for the Bulls before returning to Germany, received quick ball out wide to race through a gap on half way and finish off under the posts . Back rower Liz Philp added the conversion.

The Bulls were really in control now with Richmond rarely getting their hands on the ball as the Bulls forwards totally dominated the breakdown.

Just before the 30 minute mark stand in fly half Clair Richardson orchestrated the move of the game involving her German counterpart Bohrmann, Philp and German number three Rafica Schneider Following deft handling between the later the ball made its way to flanker Jade Binskin-Barnes who outpaced the rest of the defence from 40 metres out, Philp added the extras.

In first half injury time following more pressure deep in Richmond territory scrum half Katie Dootson span out of a couple of tackles after picking from the base of a ruck to go over for the last points of the half giving the Bulls a 24-00 half time lead.

The Bulls picked up where they left off in the second half with Richardson controlling the game from flyhalf, benefiting from the quick ball being produced by the forwards. Only six minutes from the restart Winger Sam Olliver received quick ball out wide, She went round her opposite number just outside the 22 then cut back inside the covering full back to go in near the posts giving Philp another easy conversion.

The Bulls were now in total domination at the set piece taking line outs unopposed and winning many scrums against the head. With quick ball in plentiful supply, on the hour mark replacement centre Rebecca Rowe took a flat pass around the half way line and had far to much pace and power for the tiring Richmond defence as she crossed for her first try for the Bulls setting Philp up with another easy kick.

With just over 10 minutes to play the Bulls attack didn’t let up as half backs Dootson and Richardson set up wave upon wave of attack. Spencer was next up to add her second of the day, the ex-England captain span out of a couple of half tackles to bundle over after receiving quick ball out wide in the 22.

The Bulls were still not done, with just five minutes remaining on a rare foray into the Bulls 22 Richmond were turned over, the ball then span out wide to replacement centre Sally Parker who switched with Rowe who powered her way though a number of challenges then put the after burners on to score her second long range try. Philp was on cue to add the final points of the game to give the Bulls ladies a 50-00 win!

The ladies had to regrettably say goodbye to Lisa Bohrmann who returns to Germany for her studies and we hope this is more of an au revoir than a goodbye as she leaves a lasting impression on the squad on and off the field. On a brighter note the ladies were pleased to welcome back centre Ellie Saunders and Hooker Alice Pettitt who both managed 50 minutes on their comeback from injuries giving the squad even more depth.

Forward of the match went to the entire back row of Binskin-Barnes, Philp and Spencer who were outstanding in all facets of play and back of the match went to half backs Dootson and Richardson who performed admirably in the first game together.
